Why you absolutely need a folding lock for your bike

The best bike lock depends on your needs, how much money you want to spend, what type of bike you ride and where you live. For a short trip or in a small village, a cheap lock may be sufficient, but if you use your bike a lot and often park it in places that are potentially dangerous, then you should of course invest in a high-quality lock. We clearly recommend a good folding lock in most cases. Unless you ride a road bike (in which case you need a small lightweight lock) or you want a lock for a child's bike.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a folding lock?

The great advantage of a folding lock is that it is relatively flexible while at the same time offering a high level of security. A folding lock is a bicycle lock that can be folded to a compact size. Similar to a metre rule. This has the advantage that it is very compact and you can easily attach it to the frame or carry it in a bag or backpack. The folding mechanism makes it much more flexible than a U-lock, for example. Good folding locks start at about 40 €. So they are very attractive in terms of price. Of course, the price also changes depending on the length and security standard. If your folding lock is 80 to 95 cm long, it is long enough to connect your bike to a lantern or a bicycle stand.

The advantages in summary:

  • Best combination between flexibility and maximum security
  • Raltively priced
  • Folds up small

The disadvantages

One disadvantage of folding locks is that, due to their design, they do not have the same flexibility as cable or chain locks. However, in comparison, they offer a much higher level of protection. They are also usually somewhat shorter than cable locks and somewhat heavier.

Which locking systems are available?

Folding locks are usually unlocked with a key. However, we also offer many locks with a combination lock. Of course, this has the advantage that you don't need an additional key to open it. So you have the choice and can decide on the lock that suits you best.

How do I attach the folding lock to the frame?

A frame bracket for the lock is usually included. Please read the description of the lock carefully. There are different types of holders. Some have a click mechanism so that the lock only has to be clicked into place. Others secure the lock with a rubber loop. They all work well.

A bicycle lock also secures trailers and the like.

Your folding lock does not only secure your bike. If, for example, you are travelling with an expensive bicycle trailer, it makes sense to have a second lock with you to protect the trailer from theft. Here, too, a folding lock is a good idea. Especially as the additional weight of a trailer is hardly noticeable.

A good security lock alone is not enough

As good and secure as your folding lock is, there are some tips you should follow when locking your bike:

  1. Always lock your bike to a fixed object such as a lamp post or bike stand. Small trees are easily sawed off! So they are not a good idea.
  2. If possible, secure not only the frame but also the wheels.
  3. Don't park your bike in dark, deserted places. It's better to leave it in busy, well-lit places.
  4. Place your lock as high as possible. That means far away from the ground. This makes it more difficult for thieves to pick your lock with bolt cutters. They use the floor as a lever to support the bolt cutter.

Do I need a special lock for my e-bike?
