Touring E-Bikes

Do you feel like going on long, extended cycling tours without suffering from total exhaustion, especially uphill? Have you not trained for a long time and would like to make it easier for you to start your new hobby? Or are you simply fed up with the tiresome search for a parking space for a quick shopping trip in the city? Then e-bike touring is just the right thing for you! It is the most frequently sold type of bicycle in Germany and is optimally equipped for flexible use of the bike. The perfect compromise of the advantages of all e-bike types in one bike: the agility and comfort of a city bike, the robust frame geometry of a racing bike and to a large extent the off-road capability of a mountain bike. At the same time, however, it is more sporty than the classic city bike and, especially on longer tours, significantly more comfortable than a mountain bike.

For whom is an eBike trekking bike suitable?

The trekking bike is sportier than a classic city bike and much more comfortable than a mountain bike, especially on longer tours. Another advantage is the extremely high carrying capacity, which ensures a safe ride even with fully packed bags. The change from non-motorized to motorized offers a variety of advantages. Be it the significantly greater distances or the considerably higher speed at which you move from A to B - the e-trekking bike is worth it! Both on asphalt and in the countryside, bumps and shocks are absorbed in a body-friendly way even at higher speeds, giving you an incomparable riding comfort. The high-quality e-bikes from Cube, Ghost, Scott, Haibike and Winora leave nothing to be desired.

What equipment does my eBike trekking bike need?

The E-Trekking Bike is furthermore equipped with everything the heart desires. This includes a lighting system, a luggage rack to which side panniers can be attached for even more storage space, mudguards for the unexpected rain and a bike stand.

Which frame size is suitable for me?

With regard to the frame, according to the wishes and expectations, can be selected from different frame shapes. This includes, especially for men, the diamond frame, similar to a racing bike. For this, the seat and handlebars are adjusted according to an upright sitting position to support the high driving comfort to the maximum. Equally suitable is a trapezoidal frame, which is in high demand, especially among ladies, due to its bent top tube. It is the compromise between a diamond and a comfort frame. The latter is particularly well suited for frequent city excursions, as its low step-in makes it easy to handle in terms of getting on and off the bike. The corresponding 28-inch wheels complement the all-rounder with a high level of smoothness and stable handling. With the circuit should be paid attention to at least 9 gears. Be it a derailleur for the somewhat sportier driving style or the somewhat more comfortable hub gears. Regarding the brakes should be resorted to hydraulic disc brakes, as these work with the help of fluids in the brake line and thus go hand in hand with significantly better braking characteristics.

Which trekking bike frame material is best? Aluminum or carbon?

Well-known manufacturers of trekking bikes use frame materials such as steel, aluminum, carbon or titanium. Depending on the material, there are different properties with advantages and disadvantages.

Carbon frame for trekking bikes:

Carbon consists of carbon fiber, which are connected by a special resin. The advantage of carbon is its lightness and stiffness. It is also very durable for a long time. The disadvantage is its susceptibility to damage in the event of a fall.

Aluminum frame for trekking bikes:

Aluminum frames are the most common. They are heavier than carbon frames, but still weigh less than steel frames and are cheap to manufacture. The only "disadvantage" is the stiffness of the material. However, this is compensated with suspensions or suspension seatposts.

Steel frame for trekking bikes:

Steel is the classic frame material and has always been used vür the most diverse bicycle models. It has a significantly higher weight all other materials, but it is very strong and durable.

Titanium frame for trekking bikes:

Titanium is the most expensive material for frame construction. Since the material is very expensive, it is used only for very high-end bikes. Titanium is very light, has a medium degree of stiffness. It is comparable to steel frames with the advantage of weight savings.

Which eBike trekking bike motor is best suited?

Bosch Performance Line CX
Bosch Performance Line CX

The drive of the e-trekking bike consists of the electric motor, the battery and the e-bike display. Via the latter, you can control the support intensity and, for example, with the Bosch Nyon system, you can read various information, such as the range, the battery runtime or the route planner. When choosing the battery, you can fall back on a battery capacity of 400 watt hours up to 623 watt hours. If this power is still not enough for you, the new DualBattery system from Bosch allows you to attach a second, separate battery that provides up to 1000 watt-hours. This can extend the range to 200km at a stretch, depending on the riding surface, luggage, etc. At the end of your tour, you can easily remove the battery from the mount and charge it at any power outlet in the house. The most popular motor manufacturers are Bosch, Shimano and Yamaha. The motor supports you with up to 250 watts and up to a speed of maximum 25km / h. It can be installed as a front drive on the hub of the front wheel, which counts as the inexpensive entry into the e-bike trekking area. With this variant, almost any circuit can be used. However, the front-wheel drive unfortunately also provides for various disadvantages, such as the rather unappealing appearance, the extremely increased load on the front wheel and thus also the cumbersome steering characteristics. To counteract these, today the mid-motor is mainly installed at the bottom bracket, close to the center of gravity of the wheel. This ensures better weight distribution and thus a much more pleasant riding experience. In addition, the engine is particularly quiet and still works with a high effect. However, since this is considered the most complex variant of motor integration, it is also the most expensive. The third option is the rear-wheel drive, in which a hub motor is always installed. The center of gravity moves to the rear, which is especially advantageous for a sporty driving style and on hills. The disadvantages, however, are the high effort required to remove the rear wheel and the low transmission range, which can usually only be purchased in derailleur or hub gears with three speeds.

What is the range of my ebike trekking bike?

Bosch range calculator Range of an e-bike

How much should a good eBike trekking bike cost?

In terms of price, the somewhat more simply equipped models are around 2500€; the e-bikes with more complex technology and higher-quality material at around 4500€ and more. The golden mean thus at about 3500€ plus / minus.

What is the difference between an eBike trekking bike and an eBike city bike?

E- Bike City
The ideal companion for comfortable everyday tours

The e-bike city bikes, such as the Cube Elly models, are characterized by a special retro chic in modern pastel colors. This means that nothing stands in the way of a trip into town for shopping. Thanks to the luggage rack, Ortlieb bags or Rave bags, for example, can be attached without mounting, providing enough storage space for all purchases. With the help of the low-entry frame, you can easily get on and off the bike at any traffic light, and thanks to the electric motor, you won't break a sweat on the way home - you'll be gently supported by the additional power of the motor. If it should go faster, a click on the "power button" is enough and the Yamaha or Bosch motor pushes you, almost silently, with full power ahead. The manufacturers hide the batteries and the motors now partly so well that an e-bike is not immediately noticeable as an e-bike. The motor is getting smaller and the batteries are integrated under the luggage carrier.

Which type of tire for my e-trekking bike?

Puncture-proof tires are recommended for long tours. If you often ride on different terrain, you need a universal tread. Tires with tread have better grip on forest and gravel trails. Trekking tires with little to no tread provide optimum mileage on asphalt and are usually quiet. Think carefully about the type of terrain you want to ride on.

Tires with profile:

Pro:

  • Good grip
  • Suitable for gravel roads and trails
  • Wider range of use

Contra:

  • Heavier than tires without tread
  • Louder when unrolling
  • Wobbly handling when driving on asphalt and in curves

Tires with little profile:

Pro:

  • Direct contact between tire and ground
  • Almost noiseless
  • Very good grip on asphalt

Contra:

  • Less grip off-road or on wet surfaces
  • Unsuitable for snow and mud

Which tire is the best for my eBike trekking bike?

Trekking bike tires

The right footwear is essential when hiking, especially when the weather is changeable and the routes are difficult to walk. What applies to our feet and a secure footing is also crucial for our trekking bikes. Several factors underlie the purchase decision. Many people think about your safety and the fun of riding before buying a trekking bike. Here are four important proportional relationships and criteria to help you decide.

  • Puncture-proof tires are recommended for long tours.
  • A universal profile is recommended for frequently changing surfaces.
  • Only tires with tread provide enough grip for demanding tours on forest roads and gravel tracks.
  • City tires with little or no tread guarantee optimum mileage on asphalt.

Which tire pressure is the best for my trekking bike?

  • Tire width 35 mm: 4.5 bar
  • Tire width: 40 mm: 4.0 bar
  • Tire width50 mm: 3.0 bar

We assume here that the driver weighs 70 kg.

Basically, you can not go wrong with about 4 bar pressure. The narrower the tire, the more pressure is needed. Here, 0.5 bar more can not hurt.

Which trekking bike gears are right for me?

Derailleur gears on trekking bikes:

Popular with sports bikes and mountain areas. The circuit is installed not only on road bikes, but also on mountain bikes and trekking bikes. The difference lies in the number of cranks, 1x on sports bikes and up to 3x on touring bikes. So if you prefer touring bikes, you will find multiple chainrings. Derailleurs have gears from 5 to 27. A 27-speed bike has three chainrings and a 9-speed sprocket cassette in the back.

Advantages

  • Longevity
  • Cheaper than hub gears
  • Excellent translation
  • Light
  • Spare parts are easier to replace

Disadvantages

  • Higher wear due to exposed parts and faster contamination
  • Switching only when pedaling
  • Increased maintenance effort
  • No coaster brake

Hub gears on trekking bikes:

Advantages

  • Simple operation
  • Less maintenance/care required
  • Can be switched while stationary
  • Well protected, as it is installed in a sealed manner
  • Durable
  • Coaster brake possible

Disadvantages

  • Heavier than a derailleur
  • Higher price
  • The gear ratio range is not as high as with derailleur gears
  • Repairs are more costly

Difference eBike trekking bike ladies and eBike trekking bike men

Especially when choosing a mountain bike, it is worth taking a closer look at the features of the women's model. They differ in that they provide a comfortable sitting position on trails and tours without back pain or discomfort.

  • Short crank arm
  • Tuned spring element
  • Special saddle
  • Short torso and short arm reach
  • Smaller frame size means smaller overhang height
  • narrower handlebars and grips
  • small handbrake lever adjustment
  • Low entry or trapezoidal frame

A women's bike makes sense because of the smaller frame size. The B.XXS (13.5") is tailored to the ergonomics of women, but also fits well on male models. Most models are already very well made and tailored to the average body type, but there are big differences in body types. People with smaller hands or an overall petite figure will benefit from the women's model.

How heavy can an eBike trekking bike be? Does the weight matter? Lightweight eBike trekking bikes

EA classic eBike trekking bike has a weight of 20 to 25 kg including motor, battery and accessories such as luggage rack, lighting and stand. Most trekking bikes are made of aluminum and are very sturdily built, which allows a high permissible total weight. This weight is between 135 kg and 170 kg depending on the model. The permissible system weight is composed of the weight of the bike + rider weight + luggage. Modern eBikes are equipped with powerful motors and long-life batteries that compensate for the higher weight of the bike. So you conquer every mountain and trail despite the weight.
