How do I care for my bicycle chain?

The bicycle chain is one of the most important components of the bicycle. It should be serviced and maintained every 200 km. Rust and dirt clog the chain and the drive starts to grate. If you wait too long, the chain may fail and have to be replaced. With the right care, you can prevent this or at least delay it.

You should avoid

  • Cleaning with a high-pressure cleaner
  • Do not use degreasers such as diesel or petrol etc
  • WD-40 (only for external cleaning and does not lubricate the chain)
  • Do not dismantle the chain (only with a chain lock that can be used several times)

4 steps to a well-maintained chain

1.

Clean the bicycle chain with a cloth and dry it when wet. To do this, pull the chain through a cloth while cranking backwards in middle gear.

2.

Oil the chain links, e.g. with Bix chain oil or Muc-off – All Weather Lube. To do this, apply individual drops to the chain rollers while cranking backwards.

3.

Allow the chain oil to work in for a few minutes.

3.

4.

Wipe off excess oil with a cloth.
